Acetyl L Carnitine
An important amino acid and vital component of energy metabolism, L Carnitine plays a major role in fat metabolism and the reduction of triglycerides by increasing fat utilisation. Its most important function is to transport fatty acids into the mitochondria of muscle cells, including the heart muscle, for oxidation. Ageing occurs when the energy-producing components of the cell deteriorate, resulting in reduced cellular metabolic activity, accumulation of cellular debris and the eventual death of the cell.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant that works with other nutrients such as vitamins C and E and glutathione to defend against excessive free radicals. It is called a ‘universal antioxidant’ because it is soluble in both water and lipid-based tissue. Alpha Lipoic Acid is used by the body to metabolise food and for energy production. Although there have been hundreds of studies over last 40 years revealing how lipoic acid energises metabolism, the new excitement about this vitamin-like substance can be seen in the countless recent studies focusing on how it improves the physique, combats free radicals, protects our genetic material, slows ageing and helps protect the heart.
L-Cysteine
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, known as "NAC", provides powerful immune support and also packs a powerful anti-toxin potential. Its ability to neutralise cell and DNA-damaging free radicals can help slow down what many scientists point to as a key factor in the ageing process.
Rosemary
Rosemary was known historically as a memory enhancer, dating back to ancient Greece. Rosemary contains flavonoids that are anti-inflammatory and a lipid-soluble anti-oxidant. They bind to free iron, preventing it from generating free radicals. Flavonoids reduce platelet stickiness and improve vascular health.
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgolide research shows it to have the ability to reduce inflammation. Ginkgo appears to inhibit the release of PAF (Platelet Aggravating Factor) into the blood. PAF is released in response to injury and inflammation, and causes the blood to become stickier and more prone to clotting. Ginkgo also has the ability to improve peripheral circulation.
CoQ10
CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant that supports vitamin E. CoQ10 boosts the function of the mitochondria, the energy factory of cells: something which naturally depletes as we get older. The heart muscle uses significant quantities of CoQ10, and it is important to ensure intake as we get older (and more so for those on statin medication, as these drugs inhibit its production in the body).
